She creates realistic learning opportunities and puts tremendous thought and care into the coupling of meaningful clinical experiences that supplement the students' didactic education.
Dr. Slater is a model of advanced practice clinical teaching. She is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about her patient population and continually challenges her students to incorporate clinical expertise and patient complexity into their care. While we focus our education on the acute care setting she is continuously challenging students to focus on transitioning care from the acute to the sub acute community care. She tirelessly mentors students following graduation and coaches them into their first job. She creates realistic learning opportunities and puts tremendous thought and care into the coupling of meaningful clinical experiences that supplement the students' didactic education. She is able to combine her vast critical care expertise into patient care environments and is able to adapt clinical reasoning and decision-making to where the student is in their learning/role transition. Often the transition to advanced practice nursing is challenging and students often face "imposter syndrome" when they go from being the bedside nurse expert clinician to a novice NP. She is so supportive of students during this transition and facilitates and mentors them through this process.
