Sometimes in the Emergency Department, a nurse only has a few minutes to be able to impact a patient's life. That happened recently. I had a patient exhibiting unusual neurological symptoms that had concerned me, my staff and her family. I was concerned I was missing a crucial detail or an important neurological symptom. I called my wingman, Tammy Southard, RN.
I respect and was counting on Tammy's clinical expertise and compassion to help my patient. She immediately came to the room and did a thorough Neuro-exam. I explained to the patient's spouse why Tammy was repeating the exam. The husband was tearful in his response when he told me how that made him feel. He felt that Tammy's compassionate care made a difference in his wife's care. He felt that she was there for his wife, who is his life! I am proud to nominate my wingman, Tammy Southard for the DAISY Award. She made a huge impact on my patient's family and therefore my patient.
Tammy meets all the criteria for the DAISY Award. She shows Respectful Compassion as evidenced by her respectful care of our patient. Tammy demonstrated Responsible Stewardship by ensuring all was being done for the patient to return to optimal health. I knew if I called her she would respond quickly to assist me in any way needed to ensure excellent care, thus demonstrating Deep Interdependence. Tammy displays her Passion for Excellence by continuing education, the quest for certifications, and by honoring her many skills. I cannot think of a more qualified, extraordinary nurse to be an outstanding role model for other nurses and healthcare professionals.
