Tara G. Binnall, RN
Today, I got to witness Tara shine as the nurse she has become. As Tara had just completed her RN program, which was announced and celebrated this morning in the huddle, she ended up showing off that growth and strength as a nurse on her shift.
Tara had a patient who was discharging. The family was at bedside, the IV was taken out, and the patient was about to leave the hospital. Tara noticed an acute change in mental status, leading her to promptly call a rapid response and identify that this patient was exhibiting stroke-like symptoms and needed quick intervention.
The entire team from Dr. Sidhu to the Resource Nurse and PCT, along with multiple members of the ACE team running in to assist, were at bedside assessing and getting the immediate medical care this patient needed. Tara was calm, confident, and knowledgeable about her patient in a high-stress and intimidating situation. She was able to give a comprehensive and precise report to the medical team.
As Charge today, Tara called me, and I immediately was at bedside- and Tara had already initiated vitals, obtained an EKG, called Resource, and had all of the correct wheels in motion to help her patient. Ultimately, the patient required air transport to a tertiary facility for an emergent thrombectomy.
I spoke with a neurologist who stated that a little over 80% of this patient’s affected brain tissue could be saved by Tara’s astute assessment skills and prompt escalation of this medical emergency.
Tara worked with the family and educated the patient and family, along with giving a report to the receiving hospital and flight crew on this patient. For what could’ve been a very hectic situation, Tara was on top of it and handled everything with grace while also knowing the severity of the case.
Tara demonstrated strong critical thinking skills, exceptional communication skills, excellent delegation, and also had a smile on her face through it all. The Resource Nurse mentioned on several occasions to me how impressed she was, how well Tara handled this, and what a great job she did.
I am so proud of Tara, and I want to highlight what an impact she made today.
