Tara Herman, RN

I would like to nominate Tara Herman for the DAISY Award for her exceptional kindness, compassion, and unwavering advocacy for her patient. After the surgery, the patient experienced unexpected and significant pain in a different area than the surgical site. Tara heard the commotion in the room, so she stepped in. When concerns were raised, the anesthesiologist was dismissive of the patient’s distress. Tara had cared for this patient on several occasions so knew her pain post op. This nurse did not ignore or minimize what the patient was experiencing. Instead, she listened attentively, validated the patient’s pain, and courageously spoke up on 2 separate occasions on the patient’s behalf. She remained calm, professional, and persistent, even after the physician responded with “Benadryl” for pain, ensuring the patient’s concerns were taken seriously and addressed. Her actions provided comfort, reassurance, and a sense of safety during a vulnerable moment. This nurse exemplified what it truly means to advocate for patients and demonstrated the highest standards of compassionate nursing care.

She stood up to the anesthesiologist who was dismissive, curt, and judging the patient's pain level. Twice she entered the room and said We have had her multiple visits, and this is not her. This is not what she does. Then, when asked again what they could administer for pain, the anesthesiologist responded Give her Benadryl. Tara remained professional and reiterated that this was not her experience with the patient in the past. Tara did call the patient the next day to see how she was. This concern and call were above and beyond. She listened and cared!
