Tarhata has also contributed tremendously to the innovation of the many workflows, both of nursing and interdepartmental, in the General Wards. To mention a few, she is largely involved in the changes in nursing documentation, some nursing assessment forms, and chemotherapy preparation and administration.
Tarhata is one of the most senior nurses in Saudi German Hospital Jeddah and she is well-loved by her colleagues in her unit.
She graduated in 1997 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Philippines. From then on, she grabbed the opportunity to work in Saudi Arabia, most particularly at Saudi German Hospital Jeddah. She was assigned to work in the 5th Floor General Ward in 2002. Here, she started working as a staff nurse, then became a charge nurse after a few years. She was then promoted to unit manager in 2009. She has been working in the hospital for over 2 decades. During her tenure, she has never considered working in another medical institution since she said herself that she is “happy working here.” Tarhata has already set her roots in the SGHJ community.
Tarhata has been a very effective preceptor and mentor to new staff nurses joining her team. Although she was often perceived as a “strict unit manager,” those who really know her would say that her being firm and tough has helped them become better nurses – to be more prudent and conscientious in their practice. With the tutelage of Tarhata, many of the new nurses in her unit can attest that they developed the efficiency and skill needed to meet the demands of the work in the General Ward. According to one of her nurses, “Whenever I have to attend a nurse council meeting on a very hectic day, Tarhata always encourages me to go because she sees the need for me to involve myself in our hospitals’ Nursing Shared Governance councils.” She further added that Tarhata, even though a unit manager, will also perform the charge nurses’ responsibilities. She is indeed a hands-on leader.
Tarhata has also contributed tremendously to the innovation of the many workflows, both of nursing and interdepartmental, in the General Wards. To mention a few, she is largely involved in the changes in nursing documentation, some nursing assessment forms, and chemotherapy preparation and administration. She has strongly pushed that the clinical pharmacist, who compounds the chemotherapy agents, must be in a separate room equipped with the necessary safety features. Her efforts have borne fruit and it has now become a recognized hospital policy for a long time.
What is more, when the SGHJ’s hospital administration decided to expand and create the 6th Floor General Ward in December 2016, Tarhata was the one who trained and mentored the new nurses who will be assigned to this new area. For a period of time, she handled both the 5th and 6th Floor General Wards until the new Unit Manager could fare on her own.
Tarhata has really earned this prestigious recognition as a great Nurse Leader. She has bestowed all her efforts, talent, time, and intellect to the growth of her unit, her nursing team, and consequently, of the Saudi German Hospital Jeddah.
