She kept his comfort, safety and dignity in focus even when it meant more work for her.
I'm trying to decide on a "specific situation or story" to demonstrate why Tarry deserves to be recognized and honored for the exceptional care she gave my dad and me, I decided to make a list of what I witnessed and experienced to help me choose the best one. That list was nearly two pages long. I hope these I chose truly convey how extraordinary she is.
My dad was in ICU after having a stroke that affected his ability to speak and clearly communicate. Tarry actively listened and found ways to understand him. Dad was very agitated with all the wires and BP cuff. Tarry was a caring advocate for him with the doctors, respectfully asking them to approve spot checks for his vitals when she felt it was appropriate to ease Dad's anxiety and make him more comfortable (dad also has Alzheimer's). She kept his comfort, safety and dignity in focus even when it meant more work for her.
Tarry helped me understand what was happening - even sharing stories of her beloved grandpa and his experiences as examples to help prepare me for some of the things I would possibly be dealing with in the hospital and at home. At one point I was very concerned about a med he was being given and when I questioned Tarry about the necessity of it, she acknowledged why my concern was valid and then took the time to fully explain what his body was doing and how this med was going to help. Definitely put me at ease.
I am deeply moved and grateful for the respect and care she had for my dad and me. I am also beyond impressed with her as a teacher. She had a student/resident with her all three days and I witnessed how generous and patient and thorough she is as a teacher. It is beautiful to watch someone who just knows how to teach. The resident got to see an amazing example of how to treat a patient and their loved ones, not just medically but as real people, with kindness, empathy, and important to us, a great sense of humor. I even learned a nursing skill I will never use but I'll never forget, when placing lead wires, white of right, clouds over grass, smoke over fire (placing by color, not just knowing by number). Tarry definitely, and I believe quite naturally, goes above and beyond and is an excellent nurse and a loving human being. I am so happy she was with us, a Godsend. I'm also happy she is leading the next generation of nurses.
Note: This is Tarry's 3rd DAISY Award!
