As healthcare providers we often go through our day doing what we do because we love being nurses. When we become consumers of that same healthcare, a sense of helplessness overcomes us. We are overwhelmed and afraid.
My sister-in-law was recently hospitalized with Influenza B, CHF and NSTEMI. She was in ICU, downgraded, went into SVT overnight and sent back to ICU. The physician came in the next morning and told the nurse that he wanted to send the patient home that she could do her cardiac rehab at home. Her Nurse, Tashi Benjamin, suggested that the patient be downgraded again rather than be discharged. Tashi's assessment skills and knowledge were top notch because soon after my sister-in-law developed shortness of breath and had to be placed on BiPAP. She remained in and out of ICU/PCU for the next few days. I thank God for Tashi as she advocated for my family member and comforted me when I cried. This is why I believe that Tashi Benjamin deserves the DAISY Award.
