My husband had a heart attack in the cardiologist's office and was rushed to the ER. After tests were run he was sent for catheterization. He has been my best friend for 46 years. I was terrified and overwhelmed.
We were finally reunited in the Critical Care Unit and I could not process all that was ahead. I wasn't sure how to support him when I felt so helpless myself.
Then I met his nurse. Tashonda Cunningham came into the room bustling with confidence and efficiency. If she had been nice, I would have fallen apart. Instead, she was friendly, but all business. She made it clear that my job was just to love him and the medical staff would do the rest.
As I watched her work over the next few days, I trusted that she was the best possible advocate for my husband's recovery. Ms. Cunningham strikes the perfect balance between caring for patients, including families, but remaining the alpha person in that room. She is awesome!
