I was in the ICU as a patient for 4 days and I just want to say that the care I got from Tatiana, the night shift nurse, was above and beyond what I could ask for. She had told me at the start of her shift what to expect throughout the night, blood draws, blood pressure, temperatures, etc., how often they would happen, so I knew what to expect, very comforting. She also told me if I needed anything just push the nurse button even if it was to go to the bathroom. I know a lot of ICU patients needed more care than me, I was in there for heart fibrillation and felt pretty good other than being tired.
Throughout the night I was in and out of sleep quite often and had to go to the bathroom numerous times. As soon as I pushed the button, Tatiana was there to help me out of the bed and I'm glad she was because of the IV's and all the plugs and being half asleep, I would not have made it to the bathroom.
Just before the end of her shift she came in and asked me if I would want a sponge bath which I declined. My wife who has been a nurse for 25 years said that asking a patient for a sponge bath can be rare, especially at the end of a shift.
I believe in order to be a great leader you have to be a Greater Servant, and Tatiana exemplified just that! Again, her care for me and her attentiveness to my needs were above and beyond what I expected or could have asked for.
