Taylor Butler, RN

Taylor is an exceptionally experienced nurse who consistently demonstrates clinical excellence in our Emergency Department. On this particular day, she truly exemplified our organization’s motto, “Here to Serve.”

A patient arrived in our ED following a prolonged extrication from her home due to deplorable living conditions. The patient had been immobile in her medical bed for an extended period of time, resulting in tissue decomposition into the mattress and the bed rail becoming embedded into her skin.

Taylor immediately stepped in and began assisting with debridement and cleansing of the patient. The patient presented with extensive wounds, fecal contamination within skin folds, and maggot-infested wounds. The severity of the condition and the overwhelming odor caused multiple staff members to become nauseated.

Taylor remained at the bedside, eliminating any concern for herself and focusing solely on the patient. She provided hands-on wound care, including cleaning deep wounds that tunneled to the patient’s femur, assisted with transport to imaging, and remained actively involved throughout the patient’s treatment process.

During care, Taylor endured extreme conditions, including maggots falling into her shoes, near episodes of vomiting, and the need to shower and change scrubs due to contamination. Despite these challenges, she remained the primary nurse and continued delivering exceptional care.

This case was not only medically complex but emotionally and physically difficult, involving patient neglect and law enforcement involvement. Throughout it all, Taylor displayed unwavering professionalism, empathy, compassion, and dignity for the patient. She ensured the patient received the best possible care, placing the patient’s well-being above her own discomfort.

Taylor consistently sets the standard for excellence within our department, and her actions that day serve as a powerful example of what it truly means to serve.
