You could see the compassion she had for my dad and our family.
My stepfather was flown into Duke following cardiac arrest. He ended up in the cardiac ICU. Once I got there two days later, I met Taylor and C. Taylor was the day shift nurse and was precepting C. Right away, I noticed we had a very attentive pair of nurses taking care of my dad. Little did I know they were so much more. I work for another hospital system and have interactions with nurses and patients of all levels. These two nurses truly are special. It felt like we had a member of our own family taking care of my dad, and at that time of our lives, that was exactly what we needed. That's what everybody needs! We had a ton of issues with a very rude employee at the front door. We have a big family and understand that there are rules as far as how many people can get passes into the ICU, and that's okay, but she was as disrespectful as could be. When a loved one is on life support and end-of-life care is being discussed, the last thing a family needs is to feel unwelcomed and fought with. On top of Taylor managing my father's condition, she saw to it that we were taken care of as a family. Taking it up her chain as far as she needed to get the treatment we expected and thought we deserved. Taylor talked to us and fought for us. She understood that our family needed straightforward conversations, which are oftentimes hard to have. Nurses today are so burnt out and exhausted that everybody gets used to mediocre care and attention. Taylor is the total opposite. It was so refreshing. You could see the compassion she had for my dad and our family. To make it better, that was what she was teaching C on top of just managing a patient. They were not only advocates for my father but for us as well. Our family has a lot of people in health care and when we see and meet people like this, we want to make sure that they are recognized. Taylor and C truly are special and were amazing! When I looked at Duke's mission vision and values, she checked all of the boxes. Thank you, Duke, and more importantly thank you, Taylor.
