Taylor Ehmer, RN II
After being in the ER for numerous hours late in the evening, B was finally admitted to a room on 5 West. Taylor Ehmer was his nurse for the 7A-7P shift for that day and for Sunday. I am going to combine the Core Values of St. Luke's because I believe Taylor very professionally and smoothly acted, spoke and demonstrated her nursing roll in such a way that intertwined the values very well.
Taylor was respectful of B's needs from start to finish. She was determined to get him comfortable, to make sure she had the correct doctor's orders for what was necessary, and to make sure his medications were correctly ordered to keep them as close to his home schedule as possible. I need to expound on the medications. B takes 24 different medications, including eye drops, several times a day. My husband has a neurological disorder that took a few years to identify the medications that would address his issues properly. He is also healing from an eye condition that has him on a strict eye drop regimen. Aside from those major things, he takes other medications as well. In a hospital setting, it is easy to get medications, and eye drops out of sync, not ordered correctly, or not ordered at all. I have never seen a nurse go to the extent that Taylor did, to call the hospitalist and pharmacy several times to make sure that B received his neuro medications and eye drops as he needed to. She truly went above and beyond in striving for the best medication outcome for B.
Taylor checked on B frequently, showing kindness and compassion in everything she did, and one could tell that she truly wanted the best for him. She was kind, polite, and fun while she worked, rolling her personality into every task she had.
On a side note, Taylor's birthday was on one of the days she worked. Without her realizing it, she showed a very loving side of herself to us when she mentioned it was her birthday. She said that her husband was bringing lunch to the staff and that the reason she didn't mind working on her birthday was "because the staff was like family to her and that when you're surrounded by family while working on your birthday, what could be better?" That was such a beautiful statement about her work ethic and love for her co-workers.
In everything she said and did for my husband, we feel she was also doing for others, because this is how she was beautifully made. She works within the Core Values, bringing Reverence, Integrity, Compassion, and Excellence to her work every day.

I am a retired RN of 47 years. I have been retired for 5 years. I cannot express, in today's world, how wonderful St. Luke's Hospital was to us in every way. I also am so happy to see nurses like Taylor, who are truly in the nursing profession for the right reasons.
