Taylor is consistently looked to as a leader on our team. While as a charge nurse she takes on the intricate ins and outs of managing an ICU and does it well, I may add, however, it is when Taylor has the chance to be at the bedside caring for patients that she really shines. Taylor cared for a patient who had been in our care for the past 26 days. Her husband left to go home for the weekend (about 2 hours away) and before he left, he told staff that all he wanted to do was talk to his wife and hear her voice- his best friend. The two seem to be joined at the hip and simply complete one another. When he is not at the bedside, he calls every shift to check on her status and to ensure she knows he's there for her. That morning, he asked over the phone for us to call him with any news. The patient was doing so well over the course of the weekend that Taylor advocated for a trial of a speaking valve device used on her trach. Immediately, the patient began to speak and ask questions about her family and especially about her husband. It would have been easy for Taylor to answer her questions and move on, but Taylor saw this as an opportunity to encourage not only the patient but her husband as well. Taylor called the patient's husband to tell him it had been a great day and that she had some great news for him! She held the phone up to the patient's ear so that they could catch up! This was the first time he had heard his wife's voice in 26 days. I can't imagine how much this small act meant to both this patient and her husband. It's also these small things that truly show what a person is made of and I am so proud to be on a team with someone like Taylor.
