Taylor Schatzel cared for a patient she was assigned to who had hypertension and pain issues.  Taylor was very attentive to the patient with monitoring his blood pressure as ordered and rechecking it after medication was given to him by the bedside nurse.  This student had excellent communication with me and the beside nurse with updates on the status of his blood pressures and pain. This patient had no family visiting during our clinical day, so the student stayed with him to keep him company and while making conversation with him, it provided the use of distraction as an intervention technique.  When it was time for post conference, the student asked me if she could stay with her patient and I indicated that this was fine.  After post conference, the student communicated with me that her patient's blood pressure was not getting any better due to his pain and he also had some nausea at this time.  The bedside nurse was busy with a difficult new admission, but we did speak to her about our concerns.  I offered to help her by having the student administer IVP Zofran and a new PO pain medication while I observed student closely.  We did not leave clinical until close to 3:30pm that day.  I overheard the patient talking to the student and he thanked her for being so nice and attentive to him during her clinical day.  This really meant a lot to the patient and he was truly thankful for her. This student demonstrated outstanding compassion at the bedside and put her patient first.
