A note of recognition for our mother's passing. L entered Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital for a procedure and did well; however, she experienced what we understood as respiratory failure while in recovery. Consequently, her surgeon and staff had to re-intubate her emergently. A cascade of events followed. Mom was hospitalized and remained on the 6th floor during her stay. She was unable to safely swallow, had an NG tube, and developed aspiration pneumonia. When her condition deteriorated dramatically, she was placed in Hospice. During her stay, her four children alternated being with her through visiting hours and around the clock. We are grateful that a break in COVID regulations at that time allowed us to be at the hospital with her. We took comfort that we could be there with her throughout her ordeal. We appreciate the care and routine visits from the hospitalists and her medical staff. Our questions and concerns surrounding her care and med changes were addressed in depth. Everyone updated us with each change in her status. The nursing staff was attentive and compassionate. They attended to mom's every need. The Hospice staff helped us during our decision-making process to pursue the best care for her. The nursing staff provided Mom with superior care. They were supportive of us as well and it felt like we were their patients too. Tiny acts of kindness to her and for our needs as well were heart-warming. These folks no matter what level within the staff hierarchy - aides, nurses, custodians, etc. emulated compassion and caring. They made a difficult time in our life and Mom's a little more bearable. These hospital staff and caregivers represented the Heroes in Health Care, above and beyond the existence of working under the stress of COVID. They are truly appreciated for the people and humanitarians they are. They support your mission statement by their actions and reflect having a vocation and not just a job. They made a difference!

Thank you for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
