During a pre-op assessment for an ENT procedure, Sarah observed that her patient had severe dental carries. She also observed some other things and solicited help from a colleague (Rachel) who in turn spent hours on the phone trying to ensure the safety of a child. During this same time, another dental patient's procedure was canceled. Sarah knew of this and orchestrated with the PACU charge (Danielle) and the OR charge (Krista) and the dentist as well as the ENT surgeon to try to get the child's teeth fixed while they were here under anesthesia. This group of nurses Sarah, Danielle, Krista, and Rachel worked together, ensured the insurance company was called, the dental surgery was approved, that cases/staff/equipment were secured around so that the child could also have their teeth fixed. Sarah also spent several hours on the phone filling in for social support in regards to this situation. This is a heartwarming example of our Perioperative team joining together and putting t kids first stat! Rachel, Krista, Danielle, and Sarah, I did get the opportunity to observe this situation and I am so honored to be a part of this team. You all care so much for these patients each and every day. Sarah an extra kudos to you for all your hard work with social work.
