No grand gestures, just pure compassionate care, attention to detail, and a resounding love and respect for the role he filled in our lives tonight.
My dad was admitted to and Tenzen was the night nurse. While we had many exemplary nurses in our 11-day stay which transitioned from an elective Colectomy to intensive care and an emergency follow-up surgery, we encountered Tenzen after the hardest 24 hours of our life. He came on shift and immediately began to care not only for our dad, laying in the bed at the end of life, but also us, his children at the bedside on night vigil. Tenzen is the epitome of compassion in nursing, from ensuring we were comfortable with Dad’s pain management to reassuring us with warm blankets, water, and the utmost in emotional and physical support. As a family nurse practitioner, I want to recognize my colleague as the only caregiver I have had in this end-of-life transition where I felt I could drop my own caregiver facade, sit there only as his grieving daughter, and have my own grief supported, my spiritual needs met, and know that my dad is in extraordinarily loving and caring hands. My dad… my siblings, and I… all mattered to Tenzen tonight and that means more to me than I will ever be able to put into words. No grand gestures, just pure compassionate care, attention to detail, and a resounding love and respect for the role he filled in our lives tonight. I have one other nurse that I have encountered in my life that I remember by name and have used in perception long nurses and nurse practitioners. I met her the day my daughter was born. Today, I met another who will always have a place in my heart, on the day that my dad took his last breath.
