2 weeks ago – IR was treating a 12-year-old pediatric neurosurgery patient from APH. After the procedure, when the team pulled the femoral sheath, we believe the patient vagaled, and her HR dropped into the 20s, and she began decompensating. Given the heightened complexity of caring for a pediatric patient in an adult hospital setting, the team activated the Code Blue button - seeking every possible source of support for her care.
As the overhead announcement echoed through the unit, the patient’s family waiting nearby became understandably frightened. Recognizing the situation and thinking of the family’s fear, one of our nurse’s Terri Muller went out of her way and found them in the waiting room and immediately built a connection, going straight to there to comfort them.
She gently explained what was happening, reassured them that the team was acting out of an abundance of caution, and escorted them to our private consult room to provide space, calm, and dignity. There, Terri offered water, reassurance, presence, and prayer—an example of her unwavering commitment to supporting not only the patient, but the entire family.
Meanwhile, the clinical team worked together seamlessly, demonstrating true collaboration as they stabilized the patient. Ultimately, the child recovered and was taken to the post-procedure area where Terri continued to check in with the family throughout the patient’s recovery period, ensuring they felt supported, informed, and cared for every step of the way.
