It's difficult to pick just one reason why this amazing nurse and person is so deserving of this award. Many of us in the unit refer to her as "Mother Teresa." Every day she goes above and beyond for not only her patients but also their families. I will never forget the day she helped one family in particular - the family member of a patient who, unfortunately, did not make it.
Teresa was immediately at their side offering condolences and escorting them to the chapel, not so much for religious reasons but because she knew it would be a larger, more private and quiet space. The family wanted to know "what to do next." Teresa was able to walk them through options and eventually the family concluded that they knew their loved one would want to donate organs. Teresa wasn't exactly sure of what steps needed to be taken but knew with organ donation, time was of the essence and began literally running around the hospital getting answers and making it possible for this family to follow through with their loved one's wishes.
Teresa held their hand from beginning to end, giving them her full attention. She is the most compassionate and kind-hearted person I've come across. She is always a patient advocate and can recite "Patient's Rights" from memory. She is amazing and I strive to be more like her every day, both personally and professionally. I am honored to work beside her and to also call her a friend.
