Teresa is passionate about educating staff about prevention. She has developed education and delivered this to the floor nurses.
Wound Care is not discussed in nursing school, and there aren’t monitors that will alert a nurse when a wound starts to develop, our wound prevention and monitoring are only as strong as the education the nursing staff receive.  Teresa is passionate about educating staff about prevention. She has developed education and delivered this to the floor nurses. She has also worked with leadership to build key quality metrics and bring awareness to the importance of wound care. To engage staff in her teachings Teresa has used her own money to purchase prizes, gift cards, and snacks.

She has come in on days off, holidays, early mornings, and late nights to ensure that patients are receiving the care that they need. Understanding that nursing is a team approach with all clinicians, she will schedule herself around the patient and provider needs.

Wound care is not always the most glamorous, it can be pungent in smell and can take a great deal of tenacity to care for these patients. Wound patients can be very self-conscious about the smell often present with their wounds, knowing this Teresa ensures to keep composure when working with patients to ensure their dignity. There recently was a patient that Teresa took time to connect with. Through this relationship, this patient was empowered to take Teresa’s recommendation, follow up with the clinic after her inpatient stay, and now looks forward to enjoying summer much cooler knowing that she can wear shorts.

In addition, there was an elderly patient who had taken several falls resulting in a skin evulsion. Teresa not only carefully provided care (ensuring that pain was as minimal as possible), but also comforted the patient. When wrapping the wounds, Teresa took the time to draw and write sweet and caring messages on the wraps. When the day came to discharge the patient, she was saddened to leave her skillful and comforting nurse Teresa.

Teresa has taken this hospital from “good” to “great” and has worked to overcome several barriers to provide the best patient care. It was stated by a fellow peer, and I couldn’t agree more, “We have one of the best wound nurses in all of Dallas”. Recently a fellow coworker said, “We could use a hundred of her.”
