Terri is also very involved in the practice of her unit. She is an outstanding nurse leader and has one of the highest leader rounding scores as a leader.
Terri is one of the most passionate nursing leaders that I have had the pleasure of working with. This past year, COVID has really been a challenge for multiple leaders within the organization. However, as the nursing leader of the ICU department, Terri definitely faced multiple challenges. When the nursing staff were faced with heartbreak and loss that some had never experienced prior, Terri forged forward and led her team to create a meaningful vision and embraced the team who had been struggling emotionally with the unknown of the pandemic. She gave herself physically by providing a pathway to support by adapting her schedule and working night shift for several weeks. This was instrumental in the eyes of her team as well as her colleagues to see her work right alongside the front line forces.

Although she was there physically, the amount of individual staff support she created for her team emotionally, was priceless. Terri helped create a respite room for staff in the ICU family room. This provided a sacred space for staff to get away and take a moment for themselves. Terri also continuously encourages her team to take care of themselves and she does this by leading by example.

Terri would share with her team what she likes to do to maintain resilience which is watercolor painting. Each week she would bring in a watercolor and share this with her team. She would place it on her door, so they knew she was practicing resiliency! She modeled the way to reduce the anxiety of the pandemic and ultimately reduce burnout for the team. Terri fostered resilience during a time where 10-20% of the nursing workforce has left the field all together across the nation.

Terri is also very involved in the practice of her unit. She is an outstanding nurse leader and has one of the highest leader rounding scores as a leader. She introduces herself to the patients and lets them know she cares about them, providing herself as an advocate. She will also monitor the practice on the unit to ensure patient experience practices are promoted including bedside shift report and intentionally hourly rounding. She also offers help as needed, offering herself as a break nurse. She is an advocate for patients for her staff and is never afraid to speak up modeling our safety first techniques of raising a concern. Her passion for quality and safety is also exemplary. She supports the unit in always maintaining an environment of quality care for our patients. Terri’s leadership fosters a culture where there is strong shared governance. She provides her team the autonomy to bring forth suggestions. Her team was one that had previously struggled with CLABSI infections and Terri helped lead her team in a pilot with Prevantics. This pilot has changed the entire practice at St. Anthony Hospital. It has been over 1,000 days since we have had a CLABSI, and Terri’s project went on to be published.

As a leader, it is vital to encourage and empower staff through recognition. Terri has created an entire board on nursing recognition and highlights kudos, patient letters, and recognition by other colleagues to help promote positivity within the department. She is a role model for exemplifying compassionate and exemplary practice, creating an environment that fosters teamwork, and promotes continued professional development. She is an asset as a nursing leader for St. Anthony Hospital. Terri models her own behavior on the foundation of the values of VMFH and The DAISY Foundation.
