I am incredibly blessed to depend on and learn from these strong women who I am proud to work alongside.
I would like to nominate Carmelina Ciccarello RN, Kim Martins RN, and Erin Palmerino RN for The DAISY Award. These three experienced & knowledgeable nursing professionals are the night shift Tertiary Nurse Leaders for the ICU/CCU.
The ICU/CCU is a high acuity and fast-paced unit that cares for critically ill patients from all walks of life, and the nursing staff on this unit spends their shift keeping these patients safe, starting on the path to healing, and juggling multiple challenges that would impress anyone spending just a minute with these esteemed professionals. While all of the ICU/CCU Nurses have these strong skills, there is a team of three nursing leaders that support the night shift exclusively. Carmelina, Kim, and Erin have many years of experience between them, but it is not just experience that makes these Nurses special. These Nurses are at the forefront of Critical Care and consistently use their brains and caring manner to keep the unit going.
When starting this nomination, I wanted to find qualities for each Nurse to single them out, but I quickly realized that all three of the Nurses embody the superb following qualities equally: They will immediately be at the bedside for every single emergency or crashing patient, embodying a strong pillar of support to those who may need help or who have floated to the unit and have a sick patient. They will without question take a patient assignment if it means it will help the unit readjust and make things smoother, safer, and better for the Nurses and patients. They are a wealth of knowledge with cardiac devices and special circumstances, and will be the first ones to impart their tips and tricks to others caring for these deviced patients, and serve as a phone-a-friend resource to other critical care areas who may have a device that needs troubleshooting.
They are always the first friendly faces at the bedside during codes on the floors, and many a time a Med-Surg RN has told me after a code how grateful they were for the help and steady calm of the CCU Nurse. If I am at a code and I turn to see one of the CCU TNLs at the bedside, I know that we are building the best team we can. These Nurse Leaders are frequently checking in with their staff, asking how they can help, what they can do to let them take a lunch break, and how they can further patient outcomes in their unit. They are the first ones to volunteer for bedside patient care, especially during the tough times of the COVID pandemic where multiple patients needed all hands on deck.
When you need to find the CCU TNL, they are probably in a patient room jumping right in as a resource and valued team member. I am incredibly blessed to depend on and learn from these strong women who I am proud to work alongside. They are truly the face of Lahey Nursing and I couldn't be happier to nominate such a brilliant and dedicated group of Nurses for The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
