One evening, I was taking care of a young patient with a history of a traumatic brain injury and frequent seizures. The patient's mother was a nurse who slept over every night so that her son was not alone. Tess Bussman came over from her own unit to allow the patient's mother to go home and get some rest. She packed pajamas and spent the night at the patient's bedside.Tess modestly stated that she was this patient's CNA years ago before becoming a registered nurse. On this night, the patient had a seizure that thankfully resolved quickly. Tess gently held the patient's hand, softly patted his head with a cool cloth and cheerfully encouraged him to keep his oxygen on.
