I am a graduate student at the SON approaching graduation in May 2012. I would like to nominate Tessa Thorstenson, FNP as a nominee for the DAISY Faculty Award. Tessa is an outstanding preceptor and has impacted my education in many ways. She has offered her
knowledge of indigent care in the community clinic setting and has provided me with a solid foundation of providing primary care for this population. Tessa has focused my practice to align with current clinical guidelines while supporting patient education and involving patients in the decision making process.
She has provided me with confidence in my clinical competence yet challenges my thinking to ensure that I am considering the whole clinical picture and patient situation. I am involved in all aspects of her clinical practice to actually embrace her role and daily functions. She offers helpful guidance yet allows my independence to identify problems and create care plans as necessary. Often Tessa brings in resources from home or from previous lectures for my benefit. Tessa is nearing the end of her pregnancy yet has allowed me to follow her throughout this semester until she goes on maternity leave. Precepting is a big commitment for anyone, especially a near term pregnant nurse practitioner. She is passionate about teaching and providing excellent care for the free clinic, her values are apparent in her work and she is greatly respected by her patients and this community. I am grateful to have learned primary care in this free clinic setting with Tessa, she has offered her knowledge and guidance to further my role as a nurse practitioner.
Thank you for this opportunity,
