June 2026 Honoree
Thaynara Carvalho, RN
During a shift, we had two separate OB emergencies that involved Spanish-speaking patients. It was clear that interpreting was proving to be a challenge, as the patient was confused. I knew Thaynara Carvalho was on her lunch break but immediately came to help translate when I called her. Her presence allowed the patient and family to understand what was happening in a scary moment and helped the team provide the best care.
Shortly after the first situation resolved, another OB emergency was paged overhead in the ED. She once again responded with no hesitation. This patient was also Spanish-speaking. Her translating was incredibly important during this situation because the patient was found unresponsive. Her ability to communicate with the patient and her family was critical in helping everyone piece together what had happened and guide the team on a treatment plan.
Her willingness to leave her break and come support both of these patients shows her compassion and made such a difference. I am incredibly lucky to work alongside her, and our patients are even more lucky to have her.
