I wanted to share a beautiful story about my fantastic co-worker, Theresa, that made me nominate her for this prestigious award. No matter how challenging 2020 year was for all of us and how hard we, as nurses and our families, were hit by this pandemic, Theresa recognized the struggle of one of our NICU families and went over and beyond to help them. I am sharing her post: " I am sure most of you know the story of the family "S" and their little girl...her mom has only been able to visit a few times because she got sick shortly after C-section. It was very bad, and she ended up in ICU with fevers, drains, an NG tube, and multiple surgeries. Many of you met Dad; He is in the hospital every day, sometimes multiple times, holding and loving that baby girl. What you might not know is that he is trying to hold onto his job as well as hold down the fort at home for the five other kids they are raising. They have four girls, ages 3,6,7,10, and one 10yr old boy at home. Upon further talking with him, we found out that 4 of those are nieces and a nephew that they took in,3 when their mom died, and one from a drug-addicted mom. But you wouldn't know it by seeing daddy hold his daughter! He often has a smile and "Thank You" for us! I feel fortunate to have been able to work this year when so many others did not, and I am even more grateful that my family is healthy. And, to me, nothing feels better than giving back to others! If anyone wants to donate-any little bit is welcome...!" In the end, this was a huge success! We collected a significant amount of money, and all kids were showered with Christmas gifts! There are no words to describe the look on the father's face when he got surprised with all of this-just on time to have a Merry and Bright Christmas! And there are not enough words to describe Theresa because this is just a drop in the ocean of great things she has done! I want to use this chance to say "Thank You" to Theresa, in the name of the whole Neonatal Intensive Care unit! Thank you for being such a wonderful nurse, educator, colleague - human being! Thank you for every retirement party, wedding shower, and other spirit-lifting thing you have organized! Thank you for every single thing you have done for our unit to make it a better place to work!
