Theresa continued to communicate with me, the hospice nurse practitioner, the whole morning, advocating for further symptom management.
“A True Advocate” Theresa was caring for an advanced-stage cancer patient on her unit who was making the difficult decision to transition to home hospice. Unfortunately, while plans were getting started to get her home, this woman took a turn for the worse. This is where Theresa stepped in and truly advocated for her patient. The patient was experiencing sudden, extreme pain. Theresa continued to communicate with me, the hospice nurse practitioner, the whole morning, advocating for further symptom management. She never batted an eye at the type of management this patient needed. Unfortunately, it became exceedingly obvious that this patient wasn’t going to make it home. Theresa took the time to show compassion and provide emotional support to this family during their loved one's now rapidly changing condition. Theresa showed compassionate, patient-centered care, which was appreciated verbally by the family. She amazed me as a provider in the way she handled a difficult situation with uncontrolled pain and wasn’t afraid to advocate for her patient's comfort!
