I am the mother of a 9-month-old daughter who was in need of ear tubes. When I heard the news, I was devastated. You may say "an ear tube procedure is simple, no big deal." My response to that is "yes, but being a first-time mom going through this was anything but simple." We arrived at the hospital early the morning of the procedure and checked in. Theresa, a nurse in the surgery center, took us back to get my daughter's weight. Instantly, there was a feeling of comfort from the tone in her voice. When it was our turn, she came and got us, and kept reassuring us that everything was going to be just fine. She was very thorough with the instructions she gave us.
The part that touched me may not seem like a big deal to others, but it was to my husband and me. When it was time to listen to her heartbeat, she went the extra mile to make sure E's stuffed animal's heart was okay first. Once it was my daughter's turn, she did not cry. This was the first time she did not cry when she saw a stethoscope. Theresa took her time to show my daughter there was nothing to be afraid of, and in return, that act of kindness also let my husband and I know she was in good hands.
After her procedure, we walked back and Theresa was there feeding her. I think if my daughter could, she would have stayed right there in her arms for the rest of her shift. I am so thankful and feel that Theresa is a true DAISY Nurse. I come from a family where a majority of the women are nurses, and I hope they have these same qualities. Lake Norman Regional Medical Center is very lucky to have someone like her here.
