I would like to commend Theresa Roberts for her exceptional clinical judgment, compassion, and dedication during an incredibly critical and emotional situation.

During her shift, Theresa quickly recognized that one of her patients was actively declining and nearing the end of life. Without hesitation, she assessed the situation and immediately investigated the patient’s code status to ensure the care being provided aligned with the patient’s needs. She sought guidance from a more experienced nurse and the Nursing Supervisor, advocating for the patient every step of the way. Following that guidance, she took the initiative to contact the patient’s family, recognizing the urgency of the situation.

Within just a few hours of taking care, she successfully facilitated the transition to comfort measures only, ensuring the patient received appropriate comfort medications and remained peaceful and free from unnecessary suffering. Because of her quick thinking and advocacy, the patient’s family was able to be present during her final moments—something that meant everything in such a difficult time.

What makes her even more remarkable is that while managing this emotionally intense situation, Theresa continued to support the entire unit. With only one CNA on the floor, she stepped in without hesitation—answering call lights, assisting with patient care, and supporting her coworkers. She reassured the team with confidence and encouragement, stating she had this under control and was built to handle moments like this. This nurse exemplifies what it truly means to provide compassionate, patient-centered care. She balanced clinical excellence with deep empathy, not only ensuring a dignified and comfortable passing for her patient but also uplifting and supporting her team during a challenging shift.
