Thomas provided exceptional care not only to our daughter, but to us, too.
Our daughter was being cared for by Thomas on the 3rd floor, SMICU. She was having trouble breathing due to pneumonia. Her oxygen level dropped to the mid 80's and below. Thomas did everything he could to help her, but her oxygen wouldn't come up to a normal level. Thomas called the ICU doctor for assistance, but they were not successful in bringing our daughter's oxygen up. So, the decision was made to intubate her. The intubation was still not helping in bringing her oxygen levels up to normal levels. Because of this, the ICU doctor told me that she wouldn't be the same person that she was when she came into the hospital. We made the difficult decision to let her go to heaven.
All along, Thomas walked through this unimaginable situation with us. When I was in distress from what was happening, I mentioned that I was Catholic. Thomas called a Chaplain for me and also told me he, Thomas, was Catholic. Thomas helped us get through this difficult time. Thomas was very calm, compassionate, and caring as he thoroughly explained the process of taking out the intubation tube and the dying process. He assured us that she would be kept comfortable. Thomas also stated that there was no hurry and that I could call all my family to be with her. Thomas gave her outstanding care, and he was always checking on her and us.
When our family arrived, and we were ready to take out the intubation tube, Thomas was in the room with her and us, and he made sure she stayed comfortable. He continued to change her adult diapers as he was concerned that she would stay dry and not lie in her own urine. He treated our daughter with so much dignity. When the end came, Thomas was with us. He told us that there was no rush and that we could stay with her as long as we wanted. Thomas provided exceptional care not only to our daughter, but to us, too. We are very grateful for all that Thomas did for her and us.
