Thomas Kenney was always meant to be a nurse. This is evident in his excellent bedside manner, his teamwork skills, and his calm and caring demeanor.
Though a new nurse and new to healthcare, Thomas Kenney was always meant to be a nurse. This is evident in his excellent bedside manner, his teamwork skills, and his calm and caring demeanor. Throughout his orientation, Thomas always showed an eagerness to learn and a desire to do a good job. Although he has gained clinical skills, nursing knowledge, and competence, the art of caring and effective communication are attributes this nurse has always carried naturally.

Patients, families, and other staff members have submitted positive comments on his professionalism, compassion, kindness, and willingness to help others. He was a “healthcare hero” on day one, witnessing a successful cardiac resuscitation on the day he shadowed in our ED, and going on to help save countless lives during his first 6 months as a nurse. He is also known as a hero for his team, such as coming in to help his co-workers on his days off and changing a coworker’s tire in the parking lot at 11:30 at night.

Always eager to learn, Thomas recently attended a Trauma conference. Even away from the workplace, a nurse doesn’t stop being a nurse, and Thomas represented the profession well. While at a Sheetz not far from the conference, Thomas encountered an individual experiencing a psychiatric emergency. ED Nurses are often known as “The jack of all trades” as they know at least a little bit about all specialties such as pediatrics, cardiac, and critical care to name a few.

Psychiatric nursing is a specialty that requires a unique skill set, often combining compassion and therapeutic communication while keeping everyone safe. The individual Thomas encountered was having a panic attack while experiencing complications from substance abuse. Thomas was able to talk to the individual and keep them as calm as possible while awaiting EMS's arrival. Thomas was able to keep this individual and bystanders safe through skills he learned as an ED nurse as well as natural compassion. Be it at work or away from work, Thomas exhibits clinical competency and compassion. I’m proud to have him as a member of our team.
