As she sat in the hallway tearful and scared, Thomas took a knee beside her and reached out and touched her, holding her hand and he articulated to her everything that was being done in a soft and caring tone.
I was working late on a Friday evening and there was a patient that recently got admitted to ICU in Thyroid Storm. The patient had recently moved to Las Vegas and obtained a job and did not have insurance for his much-needed medication. The patient was very unstable and coded in the ED and several more times in the ICU. Thomas Tackett was the nurse caring for the patient and he responded to his patient with haste and was able to obtain ROSC. The family was notified immediately, and the wife arrived shortly thereafter and when she arrived, he coded again. Thomas was participating in the care of the patient and obtaining orders without delay and at the same time, he also managed to comfort the grieving wife. As she sat in the hallway tearful and scared, Thomas took a knee beside her and reached out and touched her, holding her hand and he articulated to her everything that was being done in a soft and caring tone. As I stood there and observed his actions I realized just how much he cares not just for the patient but for the family that is struggling with a difficult and challenging time. As I witnessed with so many people. As I share this story with his colleagues, they say that Thomas is kindhearted and empathetic and they have witnessed him always being this way. Thank you, Thomas, for reminding me of the most important part of our profession. You are extraordinary and remarkable healthcare professional. With everything going on during this pandemic and seeing so much loss of life you remind me about the most important aspect of nursing. Caring!
