Thorin was truly selfless and compassionate! During her hospital stay, when she would slip into a delusional state, he was there to help guide and direct her back to the present.
Thorin Morrow, RN works in the Women and Children's Unit and he just completed three 12 hour shifts that were extremely complicated in the care he needed to provide. It started with the patient coming in--in labor. She had a rapid delivery and delivered in one of our triage rooms. The only brief information available upon her arrival was her history of psychiatric challenges. Because he was at her side and a great support, there was a wonderful connection between the patient and Thorin.
At the end of this first day, there was a significant breakdown; Thorin stayed late to help settle the patient and support her during this psychotic break. He was truly selfless and compassionate! During her hospital stay, when she would slip into a delusional state, he was there to help guide and direct her back to the present. He created a great rapport with her significant other as well, so that between Thorin, her SO, and the physicians, a good plan was developed for her care, while hospitalized and especially for her discharge as well. Thorin went above and beyond to remain with his patient performing all required duties and supporting her as she slipped in and out of reality. After all attempts to deal with her nicotine needs pharmacologically, which she refused, he went with her when she needed to go outside to smoke, making sure she remained safe, even engaging the security staff to support this woman's fragile psychological state in understanding how much these brief periods outside to smoke improved her ability to cope.
Of course, Thorin's main focus is the health and wellbeing of both mother and baby, he handled the challenging circumstances with diplomacy, compassion, dedication to his patient, and complete support to their family! Never in the trying times during his care of this family would you have ever suspected this was such a taxing and draining patient and family to care for. He stuck with them throughout their stay; from start to finish--continuity of care exemplified!!! They truly needed that, and his calm and reassuring manner. Thorin is a perfect example of a DAISY Nurse.
