Tiffany Hunt, BSN, RN
Tiffany in the St. Tammany Parish Pediatric Emergency Department was absolutely phenomenal and exemplified everything the DAISY Award stands for. My paramedic partner and I responded to a pediatric seizure involving a nonverbal 4-year-old child. Throughout transport, we struggled to calm him while also providing the best patient care possible during a very stressful and emotional situation. By the time we arrived at the hospital, the patient was understandably overwhelmed.
The moment Tiffany entered the room, everything changed. Her calm and compassionate demeanor immediately brought comfort to our patient. She spoke to him gently and sweetly, never appearing rushed despite the urgency of the situation. She instinctively found the perfect distraction by turning on Bluey, and while obtaining his vital signs, she sang along to the theme song with a smile on her face.
It honestly felt like watching magic unfold. Within moments, the child calmed down, stopped crying, and began to trust her completely. Because of Tiffany’s patience, empathy, and incredible bedside manner, she was able to obtain vitals, receive the report, and provide the emotional support this little boy so desperately needed.
My partner and I jokingly called her the “baby whisperer” as we stood there amazed by how naturally she connected with him. What made the interaction even more meaningful was Tiffany sharing her personal experiences as the mother of an autistic daughter. It was immediately clear that her compassion and understanding came from both professional excellence and genuine lived experience. She connected not only with the patient, but with us as providers as well.
Her teamwork with EMS, collaboration with fellow nurses, critical thinking, and outstanding clinical care all stood out in an unforgettable way. As first responders, we often have to place our patients in the hands of others and hope they receive the same level of care we would want for our own families. In that moment, I knew without a doubt that this young patient was exactly where he needed to be.
Tiffany’s kindness, patience, and extraordinary nursing care made a lasting impact on everyone in that room.
