We had a patient who was not breathing and the nursing staff called Code Blue. This was the first code I had actively participated in and I was not aware of the amount of organized chaos that was involved. Lost, disorganized, shock, are all the feeling I was experiencing. I was shaking from inside out.
Recalling this incident looking back I am proud to say that I was elated to see Tiffany take control. Through this tragic mess, I regained a small portion of psychological mind back, literally from watching this angel of a nurse; hold down the fort. She was directing, ordering, making level-headed decisions. Someone had to, and I am so glad it was her. This was her patient that day along with mine. The family member was in utter despair. I heard shouting, foul words, and at that moment in time directed at the nurse (Tiffany). Blame is the game, I get it. It wasn't personal but sure felt that way. Tiffany remained calm, cool and on point. Nothing could break her. I think we can all agree that if she were to run out crying she would not have been blamed. We are only human. This is a situation that is never comfortable and nor will it ever will. Not even a mock code can deliver. Tiffany on that day was nothing short of phenomenal. I was proud to know that it is possible to be a superhero! That is what she was that day. I wanted to acknowledge the act of pure heart and mindset in a crazy time. I am pleased to say that the patient is back on our unit after spending a few days in the CVICU.
"Too often we underestimate the power of touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest accomplishment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." Quote by Leo Buscaglia
