Her kind and steady demeanor, which was in no way judgmental and was very accepting, allowed this family to complete this incredibly difficult process.
This was a very difficult patient, with whom multiple staff had had stressful encounters. Tiffany was the perfect nurse at the time of greatest need for this family. She attended the family meeting in full, a rare event (because RNs are understandably busy), and accommodated this family at every step as they struggled to let their mother die in peace. The patient had repetitively requested to die in peace during her 34-day stay at SJMO. So as an example, for facilitating the life support wean for this family, though the order was to titrate down her 02 by 20% every 4 hours, Tiffany was kind enough to do just 10% in the first two hours, and then the 2nd 10% in the next two hours. This appreciably lessened the family's concern and worry about how their mom would respond to the withdrawal of life support. Her kind and steady demeanor, which was in no way judgmental and was very accepting, allowed this family to complete this incredibly difficult process. I am glad she felt supported.
