CAPT Thomas led a seamless, two-day, hybrid summit using advanced communication technologies to link attendees from multiple regions of the country.
Under the leadership of CAPT Timothy Thomas, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Nursing Summit Planning Unit successfully organized a summit to foster collaboration among nursing leaders from nine Public Health Service agencies and three Human Services agencies within HHS. This summit was instrumental in establishing the HHS Nursing Council (HHSNC), a platform for nurses to share resources and achieve common goals that align with HHS’s strategic objectives. CAPT Thomas coordinated communication with leadership for 12 invited agencies, securing participation from eight agencies and additional support from two others, which resulted in attendance by over 20 HHS nursing leaders, including the Deputy Surgeon General and PHS Chief Nurse Officer. CAPT Thomas led a seamless, two-day, hybrid summit using advanced communication technologies to link attendees from multiple regions of the country. The outcome of the summit was the creation of the HHSNC’s mission, vision, charter, and a comprehensive communication plan to ensure the nursing perspective is included in decision-making at HHS. Through a focus on nursing education, practice, leadership, and workforce, CAPT Thomas advocated for nurses' voices at the highest levels of government, facilitated cross-agency collaboration to improve the experiences of nurses across the nation, and provided a mechanism for the PHS Chief Nurse Officer to address healthcare priorities identified by the World Health Organization. CAPT Thomas's tireless efforts have created a lasting framework for ongoing collaboration, highlighted the vital role of nursing leadership in advancing HHS's mission and strategic goals, and addressed Connection & Community and Mattering at Work within the Surgeon General's Five Essentials for Workplace Mental Health and Well Being.
