She treated my Aunt and family with a calm, but professional demeanor. We both (Tina and myself) knew what was happening, but Tina never once lost her composure.
My great aunt was admitted to 2 East for a variety of concerns. My normally sweet, friendly great aunt had become very confused and ill during her short hospital stay. When I came to visit, I became very concerned as soon as I saw her. She looked like the shell of the woman she once was. We had two very unexpected losses in my family in January, leaving my great aunt as the last remaining “original branch” of our family tree.

My family was sitting at the bedside, they are not medical, but they were very concerned about her condition and how quickly she was deteriorating. When I came out of the room to get an update from the nurse assigned to her, I saw it was Tina. Tina and I had previously worked together in the hospital and I immediately felt relieved knowing my great aunt was in good hands. Tina began providing me an update on my great aunt’s condition, but in the middle of our call, my family came out to notify me that she was now vomiting up a brown discharge. As soon as I re-entered the room, I knew it was not good. Tina immediately came into the room and called the hospitalist. She stopped the heparin drip and quickly began assessing “her patient.” She treated my Aunt and family with a calm, but professional demeanor. We both (Tina and myself) knew what was happening, but Tina never once lost her composure. She treated my Aunt with dignity, making sure during the haste of everything that her gown stayed on “covering the essentials”, stroking her forehead, and providing her with a cool cloth.

My great aunt quickly began deteriorating and a rapid response was initiated. Tina’s Ascom was ringing like crazy, but she never once left our bedside. Some of her coworkers came in to help, so she could stay. My family had the utmost trust in her. After all of the stat imaging, labs, and medications, my great aunt finally became comfortable. She did pass away later that night, but there was never a doubt about if “the nurse Tina” could have done any more. I know how crazy working “on the floor” can be from working it for years before. Tina made me, my family, and most importantly my Aunt like her only patient during our highest time of need. She exemplifies the SSM Mission and the behaviors the DAISY Award Program was founded upon by Patrick himself. Saying just “thank you to Tina” seems so minuscule for the care she provided, this is why I am nominating her for the DAISY Award.
