In the midst of my deepest fears, she restored my hope. Her kindness, expertise, and unwavering support made an indescribable impact on our journey.
I am writing to nominate Nurse Tina Li from SickKids hospital in Toronto, Canada, for the DAISY Award in recognition of her outstanding compassion, dedication, and the extraordinary care she provided to my newborn daughter, S.
S was born with a 4cm x 4cm mass on her liver and was transferred to SickKids Hospital for extensive diagnostics during the first 10 days of her life. There was a terrifying possibility that the mass could be a rare infant liver cancer. The overwhelming uncertainty left me emotionally shattered, feeling powerless as I watched my newborn undergo countless tests and evaluations.
During this difficult time, we were incredibly fortunate to have Nurse Tina caring for S during multiple shifts. Tina was more than just a nurse—she was a source of hope and comfort when I needed it the most. Her kindness and genuine concern for S’s well-being were evident in every interaction. She went out of her way to check in on my daughter, even when she wasn’t assigned to her. In many ways, Tina became S’s very first friend—someone who truly cared about her beyond the clinical care.
Tina consistently went above and beyond in every possible way. She took the time to warm my frozen breast milk with extra care, ensuring S received the best nourishment. She proactively coordinated S’s CT scans, advocated for her case with the charge nurses and doctors, and helped explain the complex medical situation to our team. Her persistence and dedication even led to S being moved to a private, isolated ward where she could rest more comfortably and receive the best possible care.
But Tina didn’t just care for S—she cared for me as well. In the midst of my deepest fears, she restored my hope. Her kindness, expertise, and unwavering support made an indescribable impact on our journey.
After 10 days of extensive testing, including MRIs, ultrasounds, and CT scans, S was diagnosed with benign infantile hemangioma and was discharged from the hospital. While Tina wasn’t there to witness her discharge, I know she would have been overjoyed to hear the news.
Nurse Tina represents everything that the DAISY Award stands for—compassion, excellence, and dedication to patient care. She made an unforgettable difference in our lives, and I am forever grateful.
