Our 16-year-old, S, suffered a sudden and unexpected cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead in the ER and as we were crying, praying over him, and saying goodbye he began to gasp for air and his carotid artery started to visibly beat in his neck. S not only came back to life, but did so with little to no brain damage! Tisha was one of our brilliant nurses in our first couple weeks in the PICU. It was clear from the first moment we met her that being a PICU nurse is more than a job to her. Being a PICU nurse is who she is. Whether she is working to keep our son alive and progressing hour to hour or she’s home taking care of all of her children and family, she is a nurse inside and out. She simply wants to help and bring joy to those around her. Tisha went above and beyond without being asked. She not only helped our son survive, she helped him progress to the next level of care. Tisha even took care of US! She kept the whole family informed, comforted, and laughing which kept us working toward improving daily. Once we left the PICU, she ensured we got a corner room with a beautiful view in the TICU. She came back to visit us multiple times even when we left her unit. Her dedication and compassion is unmatched. Texas Children’s Hospital has an angel in Tisha.
