Tom was on orientation; assessing a patient at the start of the shift. He noticed a change in the patient's mental status. The patient was immediately taken to CT. The scan showed a new stroke and bleed. The patient needed to go to MUSC emergently. Having never transferred a patient before, he quickly and efficiently took control and made numerous phone calls to MUSC, coordinating between residents, fellows, and neurosurgeons, arranging transport to MUSC. He recognized the FAST Stroke Guidelines quickly and got the patient to MUSC with the family aboard. Tom showed great compassion with the family members during this whole time.
