He was caring and compassionate. He provided education on the process but reassured us to take the time we felt we needed.
Tommie cared for my stepfather on three separate days during his 12 days in the CICU. The last day, though, was the most important. Tommie was his nurse on the day he passed after making the decision to focus on comfort care. As a hospice nurse myself, this was the day that was most important. When I walked into my stepfather’s room that morning, I knew without a doubt that he would pass that day. Tommie came in shortly thereafter and gave me a rundown of my stepfather’s medication needs overnight. He also updated me on the medications he had already been given that morning and expressed that he wanted to make sure he stayed comfortable. He asked if I get he was comfortable. My stepfather was clean in a fresh bed and gown. He looked extremely comfortable and was breathing as easily as someone could at this stage of the transitioning process. When I could tell my stepfather was close to passing just an hour after my mother and I arrived, I requested he be medicated again. Tommie was efficient and was able to medicate him for pain for a few minutes prior to his passing. What really stood out to me was Tommie’s care for my mother and me after my stepfather passed. He was caring and compassionate. He provided education on the process but reassured us to take the time we felt we needed. It was meaningful to both my mother and me. Tommie’s presence during that difficult time will be something we never forget, but will also be incredibly grateful for.
