March 2019 Honoree
tonny mao, RN
Due to extremely high blood sugar, dehydration, sepsis, and severely diminished mental state, I presented to your ER. I was inarticulate. After 24 hours in the ER, I was full of fear and anger and considered leaving. Once admitted to the 4th floor, I was emotionally exhausted. The turning point was interaction with my RN Tonny Mao. He provided immediate emotional support and an opportunity to express for the first time my deep sorrow due to the death of my only brother on Thanksgiving which had led me stopping the monitoring of my blood sugar, taking all medications, and eating responsibly. Tonny's professionalism and compassion allowed me to start crying and have catharsis about my loss for the first time. Tonny was the turning point.
Thank you, Tonny, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
