My father was in the TICU. He is 91 years old and was struggling to breathe. All day and night, the nurses were wonderful, but Tonya McCravey stood out from the rest. She was knowledgeable and high energy with a contagious, positive attitude. Tonya was able to anticipate my father's needs, whereas other nurses waited for him to call them. She explained what she was doing or going to do and why it was related to his condition. She easily developed rapport, trust, and respect with her expertise and critical thinking skills. Tonya appeared to be a team player, introducing subsequent nurses and praising their skill set, as well as reassuring my father that he would be in great hands. I witnessed her teaching and helping new nurses in the hallways. When assigned to different parts of the floor, Tonya would make the time to pop in with a cheerful hello and check on my father's progress. She made him feel as though he was her top priority. Although we had excellent nurses throughout his stay, Tonya demonstrated the leadership, expertise, and ability to connect with patients and their families, which placed her a cut above the rest.
