August 2016 Honoree
tonya newton, RN
Tonya was scheduled at 11PM to be the only cardiac surgery nurse. There was a scheduling mistake that showed she was scheduled at 7PM. She came in at 7PM to help as she knew the unit needed her. Along with taking care of a fresh open heart patient, she was a team leader. She is usually not a team leader and it is a very stressful job that she received no additional compensation for. She knew if she didn't come in there would be no one to care for the post-cardiac surgery patient, as all of the staff were travelers or newer staff. She knew her team needed her; she made child care arrangements last minute to come in knowing the situation was less than ideal. She had no resource as a 2ndcardiac surgery nurse. She did a wonderful job!
Thank you, Tonya, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
