The TWH Emergency Department faces many complex challenges, such as overcrowding, staffing shortages, and high patient acuity. Despite these hurdles, nurses in TWH ED strive to provide caring and compassionate patient care. The team ensures that patients and families feel valued and important, demonstrated compassion and empathy, and involved them in care decisions:

Make Patients and Families Feel Valued and Important:

The nursing team takes the time to actively listen to patients and their families, making them feel heard and understood.

They are committed to providing individualized patient-centred care, fostering a collaborative and valued relationship with patients and their families.

Demonstrated Compassion and Empathy in Caring for Patients and Families:

During challenging moments, the TWH ED nurses consistently displayed a deep sense of empathy, offering emotional support to both patients and their families.

They act with kindness and sensitivity, going beyond medical tasks to address the emotional and psychological needs of our patients and their families.

Recognized and validated the diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs of patients, adapting their approach to ensure a culturally sensitive and compassionate care environment.

Go above and beyond for our marginalized population and serve our patients with respect and dignity, providing caring and compassionate care.

Involved Patients and Families in Care Decisions:

The TWH ED nursing team strives to engage our patients and families in the decision-making process by providing clear and understandable information about treatment options and empowering them to make informed choices.

They fostered an open line of communication, encouraging patients and families to ask questions and express their concerns, ensuring their voices were heard and respected.

Collaborated with patients and families in developing care plans, acknowledging their preferences and priorities, and working together to create a holistic approach to healthcare that aligns with their values(involving Indigenous Health Workers, SWs, and PEERs).

The TW ED Nurses live out UHN values day in and day out in the complex, challenging ED environment. As the manager, it is truly an honour to be part of this amazing team.
