My 80-year-old close friend went from total independence to total dependence and was on a ventilator for 5 days. She was cared for by Tracy one day as well as her assisting the nurse taking care of her the next day. Tracy showed kindness and thoroughly anticipated needs before there was a problem. An example was getting an order for skin protectant before there was ever any skin breakdown. Tracy would patiently listen to her even when she was so hoarse after 5 days of intubation and was having difficulty speaking. She would tell my friend each time she was doing something and what she was doing and why.
