Trina told each one news they hadn’t been willing to hear before with compassion and empathy.
Trina’s patient had a very poor prognosis but was also very young. Her patient’s family was having an understandably difficult time processing the sudden and traumatic departure from health of their family member. This family was very involved, at times overly defensive, and required a very special touch. In one of my shifts, Trina took this family from completely unprepared and unaccepting of the reality of the situation to discussions of quality and dignity and respect for a person’s autonomy. Trina talked to family member after family member after family member telling each one news they hadn’t been willing to hear before with compassion and empathy; all the while still caring for her critically ill patient.
