TT5 "Courage in Action" Team

The TT5 nursing team, alongside CNAs, HUCs, Physical Therapy staff, and advanced practice providers, demonstrated extraordinary courage, collaboration, and clinical excellence during an unexpected and high-risk emergency situation.
Without prior notice to the Emergency Department or the Administrator on Duty, a U.S. Customs helicopter arrived on the hospital helipad carrying multiple critically ill patients in need of immediate intervention. What began as a routine day quickly shifted into a critical response, requiring rapid mobilization and decisive action.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the TT5 team and supporting staff responded instinctively and without hesitation, stepping into roles beyond their usual assignments to meet the needs of the moment.
In a highly chaotic and time-sensitive environment, team members transported crash carts up stairways to the helipad when standard access routes were not readily available. Nurses and advanced practice providers immediately initiated resuscitative efforts, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and vascular access, while coordinating rapid transport of patients to higher levels of care.
Physical Therapy staff and nursing support personnel provided essential assistance with equipment, patient movement, and continuous hands-on support, ensuring care remained coordinated and uninterrupted under extreme pressure.
Team members remained actively engaged across multiple phases of care, from the initial response on the helipad, to transport, to ongoing resuscitative efforts within the Emergency Department. Their ability to adapt in real time, maintain focus, and support one another demonstrated exceptional clinical judgment, communication, and teamwork in the face of uncertainty and high acuity.
Even as care transitioned between teams, members of the team remained present and ready to assist, continuing to respond as additional patients arrived.
Throughout the event, the team exemplified an unwavering commitment to patient care, acting with urgency, compassion, and professionalism during a critical window where every second mattered. Their collective efforts contributed to the stabilization and transfer of patients and ensured that each individual received immediate and coordinated care.
This interprofessional team embodies UMC's mission and reflects the CARES values, particularly Courage, Accountability, and Excellence. Their willingness to step forward without direction, support one another across disciplines, and provide compassionate care in the most challenging of circumstances represents the true spirit of the DAISY Team Award.
