This nurse followed me up to a code blue on CVR. They stayed with me at the bedside while I recorded the code, then handed me all of the supplies needed to insert an intraosseous line. This isn’t something we do often, and this nurse was totally on it!

We actually stabilized the patient twice, and when the patient’s daughter arrived, this nurse explained the situation (in Spanish) to the patient’s daughter while we all waited for the translation device to arrive. Due to the emergent nature of the situation, this was the best we could do, and I don’t even want to think what the situation would’ve looked like if this nurse were unable or unwilling to step into that role.

It was immediately evident that this nurse calmed and soothed the patient’s daughter. This nurse then stayed with me, the patient, and her family during transfer downstairs to the ICU. This nurse probably spent as much time as, if not more than, I did in the room. This nurse was dedicated.

A true team member showing real and meaningful compassion. Excellent! Pretty much all of our IU Health Values were on display that day, and I’m so glad this nurse is part of the team. We’re lucky to have them.
